Yellowjackets Sweep Singles Play in 7-2 Win Over RPI

The University of Rochester women's tennis team picked up its first dual match victory of the season, defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tri-City Fitness.

The Yellowjackets (1-1) were dominant in singles play, taking all six positions to rally from an early 2-1 deficit to the Engineers after doubles play.

All six singles wins were by straight set scores. Lauren Zickar got things started with her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nisha Rajamohan at #4.  That was followed by Darby McCall winning 6-3, 6-2 at #6 over RPI's Andrea Valencia. Sravya Gudipudi then pulled UR within one point of the overall match with her 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 over Allie Kallish.

The clinching point was won by Rochester's Camila Garcia who posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Erica Frommer at the #2 spot. Completing the sweep in singles was Alex Wolkoff at #3 and Abbey Reinhart at #5. Wolkoff defeated Tess Lubin 6-2, 6-3 and Reinhart was victorious by a 6-3, 6-3 score over Mailani Neal.

RPI (2-3) was able to take a 2-1 lead early on with two wins in doubles, coming at the #1 and #2 spots. Rochester grabbed the first point at #3, behind a win from Reinhart and McCall over Neal and Rajamohan. The Engineers then earned their wins from Kallish and Frommer at #1 (8-6) over Garcia and Gudipudi and from Lubin and Valencia at #2 (8-5) against Zickar and Wolkoff.
