Alex Iordache of Carnegie Mellon Wins Two Titles at Kenyon Invitational

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to Gambier, Ohio, to play in the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 16-17. Freshman Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) was a two-time champion at the event as she won her third singles flight and second doubles flight.

In singles play, Iordache defeated Nicollete Bourlas of John Carroll, 7-5, 6-1, Geylan Can of Kenyon, 6-1, 6-0, and Grace Winslow of Kenyon, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Iordache paired with freshman Hannah Rosenfield (Manchester, England / Windemere Preparatory School) to take the second flight doubles championship. They first topped Alyssa Krupp and Skye Harwood of John Carroll University, 8-2. Their other wins came by the same score against Ohio Northern University's Sabine Worthoff and Ola Latala and Denison University's Madeline Hart and Devin Gramley.

Playing in the first flight was freshmen Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and Rosenfield. Strome won her first match against Ohio Northern University's Ashley Ochsenhirt, 6-3, 6-2, before Lauren Hawley of Denison University won by default due to Stome having to retire early.

Rosenfield rebounded from a first-round loss to Lauren O'Malley of John Carroll to place fifth after wins against Wooster's Joy Li, 6-0, 6-1, and Ochsenhirt, 6-4, 6-4.

Nila Ramaswamy (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) played in flight number four and finished second overall. She started with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Krupp and then defeated Gramley, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Annie Reiner of Kenyon, 6-2, 6-2, in the first-place match.

Freshman Alexandra Cash (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) won her first match at the second flight, 6-0, 6-1, against Ohio Wesleyan University's Brooke Butterworth, before not continuing.

In doubles play, Strome and Cash paired to place fifth in the first flight. After falling 8-6 in the opening round match, the pair won 8-4 against Ilana Blackwood and Can from Kenyon and 8-6 against Ochsenhirt and Lynn.
