Tartans Top Washington University for Third Place at UAA Championship

The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team finished third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Tennis Championship after topping 13th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, 5-4, on Sunday, April 29. The Tartans advance to 19-4 for the year with the win while the Bears dropped to 13-7.

Senior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Carlmont) won the fifth and deciding point when she won a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set that she won 6-4.

The Tartans started with a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins from the first and second pairs. Sidell and sophomore Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) won 8-6 at first doubles while sophomore Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) earned the final doubles win at second doubles, 8-5.

WashU tied the match at 2-all with a 6-4, 6-4 win at second singles and later tied it at 3-all with a 7-5, 6-3 win at fourth singles. In between those wins for WashU was a victory by Strome at fifth singles, 6-2, 7-5.

Junior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) later made the score 4-4 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win at third singles that led to Sidell's match-point win.

The Tartans will now wait to hear news of entrance to the NCAA Championship which will be announced next week.
