Spartans Open Blue-Grey Invitational With Win Over Bates

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team opened play at the Blue-Grey Invitational in Fredericksburg, Virginia with a 7-2 win over Bates College on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Spartans raised their overall record to 10-2, and have now won seven-straight matches. Bates dropped to 6-2 with the loss.

CWRU opened its match on Friday against the Bobcats with a sweep of the three doubles matches. At no. 1 doubles, senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci picked up an 8-1 win over Maisie Silverman and Bella Stone, while seniors Nina Cepeda and Jessica Liu claimed an 8-5 win over Lauren Hernandez and Hannah Sweeney in the second match. Senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwellrounded out the sweep with an 8-1 win over Haley Washington and Suzanne Elfman at third doubles.

The Spartans went on to win four of the six singles matches. Freshman Mira Amin earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stone at second singles, with Liu claiming a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory over Elfman at fourth singles. In the fifth singles match, Young picked up a victory over Hernandez, 6-0, 7-5, and sophomore Katrin Gurvich defeated Washington 6-3, 7-5 in the sixth singles contest.

The Spartans two losses came at first singles, where Silverman bested Kanagasegar 7-5, 2-6, 11-9, and at third singles, where Paolucci fell to Sweeney 6-1, 6-4.
