Spartans Compete on Day One at ITA Regionals

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team competed on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Regional Championships in Oberlin, Ohio on Friday, September 22nd.

Six singles players advanced in the main 64-player draw, while two doubles teams advanced in the doubles draw.

The duo of senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci, seeded fifth in the draw, topped St. Mary's Maddie Minando and Elizabeth Preister 8-1, and then picked up an 8-5 victory over John Carroll's Jennifer Stroyne and Carlye Campagna to reach the round of 16 on Saturday.

Senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell, seeded ninth in the draw, were the other doubles pairing to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday, earning an 8-3 win over DePauw's Grace Haigh and Libby Grant. Young and Cardwell then defeated Kenyon's Annie Reiner and Alyssa Moreau 8-2.

In singles play, second-seeded Kanagasegar claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ohio Northern's Ashley Ochsenhirt. Ninth-seeded Paolucci added a 7-5, 6-0 win over Kenyon's Grace Winslow in the first round. Senior Nina Cepeda followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chicago's Adrienne Travis, while Young claimed a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Oberlin's Claudia Olaes. Freshman Mira Amin earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Wooster's Joy Li, and Cardwell capped off the Spartans' singles victories with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over DePauw's Ali Bush.

In the Oberlin Open Singles, sophomore Katrin Gurvich earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Denison's Carol Vitellas. Sophomore Lauren Beier also picked up a win, claiming a 6-1, 6-4 victory over DePauw's Grace Haigh.
