From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III, opened up their 2018 spring season with a 6-3 win against 16th-ranked Trinity (Tex.) University at the Cleveland Skating Club on Friday evening.
The Spartans improve to 1-0 on the campaign with the win, while the Tigers dropped their record to 0-3.
CWRU started off the day strong, taking two of the three doubles to open up a 2-1 advantage over Trinity. Picking up doubles victories were the pairings of senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci, who defeated Trinity's Zoe Kaffen and Caroline Kutach 8-2 in the first doubles match, and senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell, who picked up an 8-3 win at second doubles over Mary Kaffen and Paulina Garcia. The Spartans lone loss came in the third match, where senior Nina Cepeda and junior Jessica Liu suffered an 8-2 defeat to Cheyenne Duncan and Meredith Jackson.
The Spartans went on to win four of the next six singles matches. Paolucci earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over Zoe Kaffen at second singles, with freshman Mira Amin claiming a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Andrea De Leon at third singles. In the fifth singles match, Cardwell defeated Paulina Garcia 6-4, 6-3 and Cepeda defeated Francesca Canjar 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) in the sixth singles contest.
The Spartans two losses came at first singles, where Kutach bested Kanagasegar 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and at fourth singles, where Liu fell to Ashley DeBauge 6-4, 7-5.
