No. 17 CWRU Earns 6-3 Win Over #16 Mary Washington

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team claimed a 6-3 win over the 16th-ranked University of Mary Washington at the Blue-Grey Invitational in Fredericksburg, Virginia on Saturday.

The win was the eighth-straight for the Spartans and fifth this season over a nationally-ranked opponent, as the team improved to 11-2 overall on the season. Mary Washington dropped to 6-2 on the year with the loss.

CWRU started off the day strong, taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 advantage over Mary Washington. Picking up doubles victories were the pairings of senior Nina Cepeda and junior Jessica Liu, who defeated Caroline Mosberg and Rachel Summers 8-7 (7-2) in the second doubles match, and senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell, who picked up an 8-2 win at third doubles over Sara Fioretti and Olivia Moore. The Spartans lone loss came in the first match, where senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci suffered an 8-7 (7-4) defeat to Kait Brogan and Ashley Barrow.

The Spartans went on to win four of the next six singles matches. Kanagasegar earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Brogan at first singles, with Paolucci claiming a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mosberg at second singles. In the fourth singles match, Liu picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hannah Jabusch and Cepeda defeated Addie Hinton 6-3, 6-0 in the sixth singles contest.

CWRU's two losses came at second singles, where Summers bested freshman Mira Amin 6-2, 6-4 and at fifth singles, where Young fell to Danielle Mirabella 6-0, 6-3.
