Emory Opens Fall Season at Elon Invitational

The Emory University Women's Tennis team opened the fall portion of the 2017-18 season on Friday afternoon, taking part in the annual Elon Tennis Invitational in Elon, NC.

In singles action, a trio of Eagles collected victories on the afternoon to advance to the winners' bracket of their respective draw. In the Maroon flight, freshman Ysabel Gonzalez Rico downed Coastal Carolina's Somer Dalla-Bona in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to record her first career victory. Also registering her first collegiate win was Defne Olcay, who bested East Tennessee State's Yi Chi Ma 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the Gold draw. Over in the Phoenix bracket, sophomore Elaine Vernoff advanced to the round of eight with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over NCCU's Polina Sakharova.

In doubles play, the duo of senior Anna Fuhr and freshman Trisha Sundaram posted the lone Emory win of the afternoon, taking down Elon's Edo/Wallace pairing by a score of 8-3.

"I was really impressed by our teams attitude and effort today," stated Head Coach Amy Bryant. "We've got some true fighters on our team and it's exciting to see them compete!"

The Elon Fall Tennis Invitational continues Saturday with matches in both the winner's and consolation's sides of the draws. Play begins at 9:00 AM with action in the doubles brackets.
