Emory Tops Chicago, 7-2, in UAA Women's Tennis Championship Match

For the sixth consecutive season and 29th time in program history, the Emory University Women's Tennis team were crowned University Athletic Association champions as the Eagles downed 10th-ranked University of Chicago, 7-2, in the title match Sunday morning in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Emory opened the match with back-to-back 8-4 decisions from their top two doubles pairings to lay claim to a 2-0 edge. Freshman Stephanie Taylor and senior Anna Fuhr were the first to finish on court two as they won their fourth straight match. Senior Bridget Harding and freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Ricocontinued their spring dominance with their 17th straight win and improved to 29-4 overall. The Maroons bested junior Daniela Lopez and freshman Katie Chang on court three, 8-6, to cut the Emory lead to one heading into singles play.

The Eagles clinched the match in short order in singles action, taking the first three decisions to seal the title. Taylor blanked UC's Laura Gutierrez 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles before classmate Defne Olcay defeated Alyssa Rudin 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles. Fuhr notched the match point as she topped Estefania Navarro 6-3, 6-1 on court four.

Lopez and Gonzalez-Rico added wins for the Eagles after the match had been decided with Lopez winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at third singles and Gonzalez-Rico battling back at first singles to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Emory, winners of seven straight, will now head into the NCAA Division III tournament with a 13-4 overall record and will find out their first round opponent when draws are released on Monday, May 7th.
