Solid Day One for Emory at Wofford Invitational

The Emory University Women's Tennis program was in action Friday afternoon with day one of the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Eagles began the invite with a strong showing as four different Eagles advanced to the championship match in their respective singles draw with an additional four doubles teams reaching the semifinals on the day.

Senior Bridget Harding, junior Daniela Lopez and freshmen Defne Olcay and Katie Chang moved onto the title match in singles with the tandems of Harding/Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, Anna Fuhr and Stephanie Taylor, Emma Perelman and Sasha Hartje, and Chang and Elaine Vernoff advancing to the doubles semifinals.

Harding won both her singles bouts in straight sets, defeating USCU's Vale Zarama 6-4, 6-1 and ETSU's Melissa Esguerra 6-3, 6-3. Lopez added a straight sets win over Western Carolina's Savannah Taranto 6-4, 6-3 before knocking out ETSU's Yi Chi Ma in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 15-13. Olcay was also a straight set winner in both matches, edging Radford's Tyler Blalock 6-4, 6-2 before besting WCU's Jordan Strickland 6-4, 6-3. Chang was dominate in her two victories, winning 6-2, 6-1 over BC's Arianna Orpzco and 6-0, 6-1 against Wofford's Samantha Russell.

Gonzalez-Rico and Harding eliminated USCU's Sigaki/Acuna 7-6 (1) in the top doubles draw with Fuhr and Taylor ousting the hosts Hicks/Vroman of Wofford, 7-5. In the white doubles draw, the Eagles claimed two of the four semifinal spots following triumphs from Perelman and Hartje over BC's Mendoza/Orozco, 6-4, and Chang and Vernoff against Schlesener/Kong, 6-1.
