Emory Handles Washington University, 9-0, to Advance to UAA Championship Match

The Emory University Women's Tennis team will play for the University Athletic Association championship for the 31st consecutive season as the Eagles handled 13th-ranked Washington University, 9-0, in the conference semifinals Saturday afternoon in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Emory opened the match with quick victories at first and second doubles over the Bears. Senior Bridget Harding and freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico remained perfect in the spring, claiming their 16th consecutive win with an 8-1 win on court one. Senior Anna Fuhr and freshman Stephanie Taylor won their third straight, notching an 8-2 decision on court two. Junior Daniela Lopez and freshman Katie Chang rounded out the doubles sweep, taking the final three points of the match to post the 8-6 victory.

In singles, Emory registered straight set wins on all six courts to complete the shutout. Lopez and freshman Defne Olcay were the first two Eagles to finish as Olcay recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win on court five and Lopez was a 6-3, 6-0 winner on court three. Emory also saw wins on court one by Gonzalez-Rico (6-2, 6-3), court two from Harding (6-3, 6-4), court four from Fuhr (6-4, 6-4) and on court six by Taylor (6-2, 6-2) to close out the scoring.

The top-ranked Eagles, in search of their sixth straight title and 29th overall in team history, will face the University of Chicago in the championship match Sunday morning, beginning at 9:00 AM. Last season, Emory topped the Maroons, 5-4, in the title match.
