From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
Senior Nithya Kanagasegar of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team was honored as the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Award winners were announced.
Kanagasegar was selected to receive the ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Kanagasegar, an All-University Athletic Association first team honoree at first singles and an All-UAA second team honoree at No. 1 doubles, was ranked eighth in singles pay in the latest ITA Central Region poll. Playing at first singles throughout the season, she went 15-12 during the campaign, raising her career record to 56-47. In doubles action, Kanagasegar teamed with freshman Madeleine Paolucci to go 22-8 together, including a 15-4 mark in first doubles matches. The duo is ranked third in the Central Region.
Case Western Reserve ended its regular season with an overall record of 15-4. Kanagasegar and Paolucci will now prepare for the NCAA Division III Championships, after being selected to compete as individuals. The draw for individual championships, along with seeding, will be released on May 23rd, the last day of the team championships.
