The New York University women's tennis team earned a huge win today with its narrow 4-3 win over Division I Colgate University on Sunday, March 4, in Hamilton, NY.
NYU (4-0) took the doubles round from Colgate (2-6) behind a dominant #3 doubles performance from Rupa Ganesh and Kate Shaffer (6-0 win), and much closer #2 doubles match in which Coco Kulle and Anna Maria Buraya battled to a 6-3 victory. Under the Division I scoring format, the doubles round is only worth one point overall and is best two out of three.
The Violets and the Raiders split the singles matches with each squad taking three. Kulle recorded NYU's first win after coming out on top of in a nail-biting second set tiebreaker in #2 singles (6-1, 7-6), while Ganesh tied things up after a back-and-forth matchup in #5 singles (6-4, 6-3). With Sunday's match tied at 3-3, Shaffer came up with yet another dominant performance in which she defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0 in #6 doubles to seal the victory for NYU.
"The women found a way to win," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "We played a Division I format and overcame some uneven play for the victory."
