NYU Begins Play at ITA Regionals

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's tennis team completed play on the first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, September 22. The three-day event is being hosted by Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

In singles play, five Violets competed and four advanced to Saturday's round of 16. Anna Maria Buraya, Flyora Shiyanova, Judy Kam, and Coco Kulle each won their first two matches of the tournament to move forward in the 64-woman bracket.

"You can't win this tournament on the first day, but you can lose it," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "Our women did well this morning and got better as the day went on."

NYU's fifth participant, Kate Shaffer, won her first match on Friday, but fell in the second round to Michelle Fuca from Skidmore, who won last year's singles tournament.

The Violets had a pair of doubles entries, as well. Buraya & Kam and Shiyanova & Kulle won both of their matches on Friday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals, which will take place on Saturday.

"I'm happy with the day's results," added Choy. "This tournament can be a grind both physically and mentally, and I thought our girls competed well. Tomorrow will get tougher and I expect our women to respond."
