From NYU Athletics
The New York University women's tennis team ended their season with a bang as they soundly defeated the University of Rochester 7-2 in the seventh-place match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Sunday, April 29 in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The Violets (10-2) will close out their highly successful season as the seventh overall team in the UAA and an all-time best 17th in the nation. The Yellowjackets (7-11) meanwhile will be eighth in the UAA and unranked nationally.
"It was a good way to cap off one of the team's most successful seasons," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "The team is a little disappointed to not have done better at the UAA Championship, but they learned from the experience."
NYU got off to a great start by winning two of three in the doubles round. Coco Kulle and Anna Maria Buraya (#2) made quick work of their opponents in an 8-2 victory, while Judy Kam and Rupa Ganesh (#3) closed out doubles with a decisive 8-4 win.
The Violets dominated the singles round, taking five of six matches. Buraya (#25 nationally) got things started at #1 with an overwhelming 6-0, 6-1 win. Flyora Shiyanova followed this up at #3 with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win of her own, as did Kam at #5 who secured a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory. Kulle (#43 nationally) had a closer matchup at #2, but ultimately had no problem taking both sets (7-5, 6-3). The final win came from Ganesh at #4 where she edged out her opponent in a close first set tiebreaker and took an equally hard-fought second (7-6 (7-4), 6-4).
"We have a young team and they will work hard through the summer and next season," concluded Choy.
