NYU Completes Play at Vassar Scramble

The New York University women's tennis team completed play at the Vassar Scramble on Sunday, September 17, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Competing against host Vassar College, SUNY New Paltz and Connecticut College, the Violets went 10-2 on Sunday (6-1 in singles play, 4-1 in doubles play), and finished the tournament with an overall record of 27-5.

Freshman Coco Kulle and junior Flyora Shiyanova went 3-0 on Sunday. In doubles play, the two athletes, competing as a team, defeated opponents from Connecticut College and New Paltz. Additionally, in singles play, Kulle beat Connecticut College's Aleksandra Drljaca 6-4, 6-0 and Shiyanova defeated New Paltz's Brittany Grandville 6-3, 6-2. Both Violets finished the tournament with perfect 6-0 records.

"Today was another good showing," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "There was good play up and down the lineup with a number of players going undefeated for the weekend."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- The team of sophomore Judy Kam and freshman Kate Shaffer won both of its doubles matches. Additionally, both Kam and Shaffer won singles matches on Sunday, finishing the weekend with overall records of 6-0 and 5-1, respectively.

- Junior Alice McGinty defeated Connecticut College's Rachel Weiss 6-1 6-1 and finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

- Sophomore Anandini Chawla picked up her first collegiate win. The New Delhi, India, native bested Vassar's Lauren DiFazio 6-4, 6-3.

"There was a lot of tennis this weekend, but we responded well and competed hard," added Choy.

The Violets return to the court on Friday-Sunday, September 22-24, for the ITA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

"I think we have the talent to have a deep run in the tournament," continued Choy.
