Chicago Collects Three ITA Regional Awards

The University of Chicago tennis teams received a trio of honors on Thursday when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the 2018 ITA Division III Regional Awards.

First-year women's player Claire Handa was selected as the ITA Rookie of the Year for the central region. In her debut season, Handa has collected a multitude of recognitions. She was a First Team All-University Athletic Association pick at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Handa won the ITA Central Region singles title and placed fourth in the ITA Oracle Cup singles bracket. So far this season, she owns a 22-6 record in singles and a 16-8 mark in doubles.

For the second time in his career, Head Coach Jay Tee earned the Wilson ITA Central Region Men's Coach of the Year. He previously received the honor in 2015. Additionally, Kris Powell garnered tasc Performance ITA Central Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year accolades.

The coaching staff has guided the No. 7-ranked Maroons to an 18-4 overall record that includes 10 wins over nationally-ranked opponents. UChicago clinched a third trip to the NCAA quarterfinals in the past four seasons, and secured the team's first-ever UAA championship in late April. Over the course of Tee's six-year career, the Maroons have averaged 16.3 wins per season.
