Claire Handa and Marjorie Antohi led the way for the University of Chicago women's tennis team on Day 2 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional Championships hosted in Oberlin, Ohio.
Handa won both her matches Saturday, topping Oberlin's Rainie Heck (6-0, 6-3) and then top-seeded Lauren O'Malley of John Carroll in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Handa will advance directly into the semifinals via walkover due to her slated opponent's inability to attend Sunday's competition.
Antohi, the fifth-seed in the singles bracket, defeated Kenyon's Annie Reiner (6-0, 6-0) and Washington St. Louis' Laurel Wanger (6-0, 6-2) to advance into Sunday's quarterfinals. Should she advance in Sunday's first round, she'll play in the semifinals for a spot in Monday's singles' championship.
"We had a bunch of really gritty performances today and even though not all of them resulted in wins, I was really happy with our day overall," UChicago Head Coach Jay Tee said. "We gained some great experience for a young team and learned more about what it takes to compete at this level.
"Claire and Marjorie played some outstanding tennis and are still very much in the hunt for a championship. It will only get tougher from here, but I am confident in both of them heading into tomorrow."
Alyssa Rudin won her first match Saturday, topping Lake Forest's Lord in straight sets before falling in the Round of 16. In doubles play, the top-seeded pair of Antohi and Daryn Ellison won their first match against Kenyon, 8-1, before being eliminated from the bracket by a pair from Case Western Reserve, 8-5.
