From University of Chicago Athletics
The University of Chicago women's tennis team kicked off the two-day Midwest Invitational with a pair of dominating victories on Friday. The No. 10-ranked Maroons swept Augustana College 9-0, then followed up with an 8-1 victory over No. 40-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College.
The eight-team tournament features UChicago (12-3 record) as the top overall seed and two-time defending champion. University of Wisconsin's home courts serve as the site of competition.
UChicago did not lose a doubles match on the day, going a perfect 6-0. The No. 1 tandem of sophomore Marjorie Antohi and first-year Claire Handa were pushed to a tiebreaker versus Augustana that they won 8-7. In singles against the Vikings, the Maroons took all six bouts in straight sets. Sophomore Alyssa Rudin blanked her opponent at fourth singles (6-0, 6-0), and first-year Catherine Xu only surrendered two games at third singles (6-1, 6-1). It marks the second time this season that the Maroons have shut out Augustana.
The afternoon match featured UChicago versus Gustavus Adolphus. Doubles action resolved swiftly with scores of 8-3, 8-3, 8-2. GAC captured a win at No. 3 singles and pushed No. 4 singles to three sets. However, the Maroons allowed four games or fewer in the other four straight-set wins. Rudin won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Antohi rolled through her match 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.
