Lucy Cheadle Honored as Division III Track Scholar Athlete of the Year

Washington University in St. Louis three-time national champion Lucy Cheadle was selected as the female Division IIII Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2014-15 track & field season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the association announced.

Cheadle and Alison Maxwell of Middlebury College were named co-winners for the indoor track award, while Cheadle claimed the outdoor track honor outright.

Cheadle is the second student-athlete in school history to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year honors in track and field, joining 2008 indoor field winner Morgen Leonard-Fleckman.

The most decorated runner in WashU history, Cheadle claimed a pair of national championships in 2015. She won the 5,000 national championship at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March, and then defended her 3,000 steeplechase national title at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in May.

Cheadle graduated in May with a 3.80 GPA and will attend graduate school at the University of Colorado in the fall.

Cheadle's selection as the Scholar Athlete of the Year highlighted 11 honorees on the women's team who earned USTFCAA All-Academic honors. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse earned 15 All-Academic Awards to lead all women's teams, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Stout with 12, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and WashU with 11.

Melissa Gilkey, Kelli Hancock, Alison Lindsay, Daisy Ogede, Lane Porter, Rebecca Ridderhoff, Claire Simons, Ellen Toennies, Annalise Wagner and Audrey Western joined Cheadle on the USTFCCAA All-Academic team.

The WashU men had seven student-athletes earn All-Academic honors: James Fitzhugh, Britt Henderson, Drew Padgett, Joey Pasque, Deko Ricketts, Brendan Stone and Mike Sullivan.
