Carnegie Mellon Wins Annual Quad Meet

The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team turned in seven first-place finishes at its annual Carnegie Mellon Quad on Saturday, April 4.  The Tartans won the meet with 191 points while Westminster took second with 124 points.

Senior Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) turned in two career-best times on Saturday, with the first coming in the 1,500-meter run.  The senior crossed in 4:45.54 with the second-place finisher, senior Sara Kelly (Madison, Wis./West), finishing 15 seconds behind with a time of 5:00.09.  Carnegie Mellon swept the top three spots as junior Rekha Schnepf (McLean, Va./Thomas Jefferson HS for Sci & Tech) placed third with a career-best time of 5:05.36.  

Kiekhaefer's other career-best time came in the 800-meter race, as she again led the sweep of the top three finishers for the Tartans with a time of 2:18.87.  Freshman Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:19.32 followed by sophomore Ariel Tian(Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional), who crossed with a time of 2:23.53.

Senior Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) won the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters while freshman Luise Bering (Berlin, Germany) finished second with a jump of 4.77 meters.  Sophomore Sommer Farber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) competed in the triple jump and took third with a mark of 9.59 meters.

Sophomore Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless), for the second straight meet, won the high jump with a season-best height of 1.55 meters.  Farber and Fortner each competed in the 100-meter hurdles and finished third and fourth with times of 17.10 and 17.38. Spalding also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.24.  Freshman Kiersten Chuc (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) took first in the discus after throwing 32.16 meters.  

The Tartans' third sweep of the afternoon came in the 3,000-meter run.  Junior Sophie Lohmann (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) won the event setting a Gesling Stadium record with a time of 10:39.59.  Fellow junior Zofia Tillman (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) crossed in 10:45.34 to place second and freshman Aparna Alavilli (Hanover , N.H.) finished third in 10:59.45.

The Tartans' 4x100 relay team of Spalding, Cook and sophomores Emily Swanson (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) and Jerilyn James (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) took first with a time of 51.31.
