Chicago Women's Track and Field Wins UAA Outdoor Championship, Men Take Third Place

The University of Chicago women's track and field team captured the conference title while the men's squad finished third at the conclusion of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships on Sunday.

In the final team standings, UChicago was at the top of the heap in the eight-team women's field with 193 points. Washington University-St. Louis was close behind at 184 points. The men's competition was won by host Emory University with 197 points, while UChicago was third with 108 points.

For the second day in-a-row, UChicago dominated the women's field events and won three of four competitions. Junior Nelson Trotter pulled off the double by winning both the high jump (1.63 meters) and the triple jump (11.09 meters). Senior Pam Yu was runner-up in the triple jump (10.95 meters) and freshman Ade Ayoola tied for second in the high jump (1.60 meters).

Junior Nkemdilim Nwaokolo added a third throws title to her weekend haul, this time coming away with a victory in the discus with a top toss of 39.99 meters. Senior Reecie Dern placed third with a distance of 36.28 meters.

On the track, sophomore Michelle Dobbs pulled away from the pack down the stretch and triumphed in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.94. Dobbs was also the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay that finished second in 3:54.46. The relay members included sophomore Eleanor Kang, junior Alison Pildner and junior Mikaela Hammel. The 4x100-meter relay of junior Rachael Jackson, Hammel, Pildner and sophomore Charissa Newkirk also finished second in 48.81. Junior Brianna Hickey was an all-conference performer after placing third in the 1,500 meters (4:40.40).

On the men's side, the Maroons earned a win in the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome of sophomore Temisan Osowa, freshman Nathan Downey, junior Ben Clark and junior Jacob Romeo outraced their foes in 42.24, winning by a mere 0.07 seconds.

UChicago was runner-up in three other events. Downey and Clark were also part of the 4x400-meter relay – along with freshman Obinnaya Wamuo and junior Ryan Manzuk – that finished in 3:20.82. Downey was also second in the 200 meters (22.48) and sophomore Gareth Jones ran the 5,000 meters in 15:05.79. A trio of Maroons finished third – senior Semi Ajibola in the high jump (1.91 meters), Romeo in the 100 meters (10.91) and Wamuo in the 400-meter hurdles (54.72).
