Tartans Win Four Events at Washington & Lee Carnival

The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team started the outdoor track and field season at the Washington and Lee University Carnival on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17. The Tartans won four events during the meet.

junior Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J. / Madison) had a first and third-place finish Saturday afternoon, as she won the 800-meter run in 2:19.89 and earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.26.

The 4x100-meter relay also won when junior Autumn Hair (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon), freshman Valerie Reiling (Concord, Mass. / Concord Carlisle Regional), junior Claire Yuan (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook), and junior Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) crossed in 51.05. The 4x400-meter relay placed second in 4:11.73 behind the performance of sophomore Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset), Ciriello, Bhanja, and Reiling.

Bhanja also had a second-place finish in the long jump (5.01 meters) and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.53. Sophomore Keegan Barone (Chicago, Ill. / Latin School of Chicago) and Baranowski raced to fourth and fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 1:09.45 and 1:10.47, respectively. Barone's was a career-best time.

Sophomore Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) won the pole vault by clearing a career-best 3.65 meters while junior Alexa Barriero (Middletown, N.J. / Middletown North) won the javelin with a career-best mark of 35.61 meters. Senior Sarah Miholer (Stow, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) finished third in the pole vault by clearing 3.20 meters.

Senior Kiersten Chuc (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) had a third-place showing in the hammer throw with a mark of 39.31 meters.
