From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University senior Nimi Gupta won the conference title in the hammer throw during the first day of competition at the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships, pacing the Spartan women to third in the team standings after Saturday's action at the meet, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Case Western Reserve finished the day in third place, accumulating 40 points during the day. Washington finished the day in first place with 81 points and Chicago is in second with 67 points.

Gupta won the hammer throw with a mark of 50.48 meters. She became just the fourth Spartan ever to win the event at the UAA Outdoor Championships, joining Amanda Kline (2012), Temi Omilabu (2016) and senior Cassandra Laios (2017). Junior Marina Yu (43.23m) and freshman Emma Hammelef (40.40m) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, to add to the Spartans team score.

Senior Danielle Kulpins and junior Shannon Carroll added All-UAA honors in their respective events on Saturday as well. Kulpins finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:46.40, while Carroll placed third in the shot put with a mark of 12.18 meters.

Adding a scoring finish on Saturday was Hammelef in the shot put (eighth, 11.32m), senior Rachel Willard in the long jump (eighth, 5.09m), sophomore Madeline Lindemann in the 10,000-meter run (eighth, 38:12.99) and the women's 4x800-meter relay team of senior junior Maria DeRenzo, junior Isabel Torres-Padin, sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn and sophomore Tatum Naylor (fourth, 9:33.90).

In addition to Saturday's scorers, two Spartans qualified for finals in events on Sunday, based on their performances in preliminaries during the first day. Senior Marie-Louise Klosterearned a spot in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after placing fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:06.87, while freshman Julie Hines earned a spot in the 400-meter dash after finishing sixth with a time of 1:00.16.
