From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

Sophomore Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's outdoor track and field team earned All-America recognition at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is hosting the championships this year.

Karabin cleared 3.65 meters in the pole vault to tie with Maggie Krause of Ohio Northern University for eighth. Both cleared the bar at 3.50 and 3.65 meters on their first attempt and with the eighth-place finish Karabin earns All-America honors.

It marks the first outdoor women's track and field honor since 2011 when Jacqueline Guevel claimed two recognitions, placing seventh in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. The last time a Tartan claimed All-America honors in a field event was in 1996 when Penny Summerville finished second in the javelin. Summerville also placed second in 1994, these are the only other previous top eight field finishes at the national meet.

Karabin's appearance on the national stage was her first. She holds a share of the school record in the event with a height of 3.77 meters that she cleared a week ago at the Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
