From Washington University Athletics
The Washington University in St. Louis track & field program captured both the men's and women's University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.
The Bears combined for 18 event titles on the weekend and 44 all-UAA finishes. The No. 12-ranked WashU women finished with 235.5 points in route to winnings its third consecutive and 16th overall UAA Outdoor Track & Field Title. Meanwhile the WashU men, posted a championship high 248 points and won the 19th title in program history. Competitors earned all-UAA honors with top three finishes in their respective events.
WOMEN
Senior Annalise Wagner set the UAA Championship record in the 800m run with a winning time of 2:09.93. Wagner had the previous record of 2:10.33 which she set in 2016. Freshman Sophie Grigaux placed third for all-UAA honors (2:14.29) with sophomore Sara Mesiano earning fourth (2:16.18).
Sophomore Paige Lawler broke a record that stood for five-years by winning the 5000m run in 16:53.07. Her time was more than six seconds ahead of the mark set in 2013. Senior Aly Wayne placed second with a time that was ahead of both Carnegie Mellon and the stadium's record while placing second (17:04.19).
Freshman Caira Watson Haynes earned the first UAA title of her career during the 100m hurdles. She completed the race in 14.94, well ahead of the runner-ups 15.12 pace.
Junior Heidi Nassos earned all-UAA honors in all three events she competed in. One day after earning an event title in pole vault and a third place finish in the long jump, she captured first in the triple jump. Nassos jumped a career-best 11.64m, while freshman teammate Eka Jose took third with a mark of 11.14m.
Freshman Randal Walker won her second event of the meet by placing first in the discus throw. Her throw of 41.13m was more than two meters further than the second place finisher. Sophomore Katie Hasley placed third (35.83m).
Also earning all-UAA honors on Sunday were sophomore Nicky Althoff (400m: third, 58.63; 4x400m Relay: second, 3:53.05), senior Alison Lindsay (1500m: third, 4:50.24), freshman Josephine Simon (400m Hurdles: second, 1:05.22), Grigaux (4x400m Relay: second, 3:53.05), Mesiano (4x400m Relay: second, 3:53.05) and Wagner (4x400m Relay: second, 3:53.05).
MEN
Senior Roderick Smith earned his first UAA title when he outraced the opposition in the 100m dash. The Kansas City, Mo.-native placed first with a time of 11.07. Junior Eddie Wintergalen added all-UAA honors in the event with a third place finish (11.18).
Sophomore Nick Matteucci captured two event titles at the UAA Championships on Sunday. He originally took the 800m race with a time of 1:54.01 before earning another championship in the 1500m run by edging senior teammate Elvir Sarajlic by less than two seconds. Matteucci completed the run in 3:57.61, while Sarajlic earned all-UAA honors as well with a time of 3:59.10.
Freshman Andrew Whitaker and senior Michael Billington took the top two finishes in the 400m hurdles. Whitaker posted a winning time of 54.09, while Billington ended the race with a time of 54.32.
The WashU men's relay team excelled on Sunday by posting the top times for both relays. Wintergalen, junior CJ Chin, junior Jason Singer and Smith combined efforts in the 4x100m relay for the winning 42.37 time.
Singer and Wintergalen were also a part of the winning 4x400m relay team. They were joined by a pair of freshmen in Whitaker and John Harry Wagner. The team finished more than a second ahead of NYU with a time of 3:18.36.
Sophomore Collis McKenzie matched his season-high jump of 1.95m and took first place. McKenzie also competed in the triple jump.
Also earning all-UAA honors on Sunday were Wintergalen (200m: second, 22.35), Smith (200m: third, 22.62), graduate student Dillon Williams (5000m: second, 15:26.17), senior Kirby Simon (5000m: third, 15:28.49), Whitaker (110m Hurdles: third, 15.48) and senior Ezugo Onejeme (Triple Jump: third, 13.68m).
