CLEVELAND – Junior Sophia Herzog (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) broke her own school record in the pole vault, and the Case Western Reserve University women's track & field team secured seven first-place spots at the season-opening Spartan Holiday Lid Lifter on Saturday at the Veale Center.
Herzog topped her previous school record of 10 feet, 8 inches with a jump of 11'3." The third-year Spartan also finished in the top six in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.05.
Overall, Case dominated the jumping events as junior Keri Walter (Cairo, Egypt/Cairo American), sophomore Emily Harker (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), sophomore Asante Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) and Herzog all won their respective events.
Walter won the triple jump with a distance of 34'05.5" and tied Harker for first in the high jump at 5'0.25." Brown leaped an event-best 16'01.5" in the long jump.
In distance running, sophomore Juliana Ross (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) was the top performer in the 800m run with a time of 2:39.43, while sophomore Taylor O'Neil's (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) 6:07.38 was the best time in the mile.
Other top three-finishers for the Spartans included senior Gavriella Pora (Nampa, Idaho/Liberty Charter) in the 55m dash, freshman Abby Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) in the 400m dash, sophomore Christen Saccucci (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) in the pole vault, senior Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, Pa./North Schuykill) in the triple jump, and Brown in the triple jump.
The Spartans are now idle until January 24 for the BW Mid-January Meet in Berea.
