Rachel Tan Wins Three Events, Spartans Top Carnegie Mellon in Battle for the Obelisk

Senior Rachel Tan (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) won three events, and the Case Western Reserve University women's track & field team ran past rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) by a score of 81-55 in the Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday afternoon at the Veale Center.

Combined with the men's victorious score of 70-66, CWRU outscored CMU by a count of 151-121 to win the Obelisk Trophy for the first time since 2012.

Tan placed first in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5'3"), the 55m hurdles (8.97) and the 55m dash (7.58). Her time in the 55 dash was a career best, and she totaled 18 team points overall.

Also in field events, sophomore Temi Omilabu (Katy, Texas / Seven Hills) claimed first in the weight throw at 14.60m (47'11"); junior Asante Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) won the triple jump at 10.46m (34'4"); and junior captain Christen Saccucci (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) topped the field in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 3.20m (10'6").

On the track, junior captain Taylor O'Neil (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) won with a time of 2:25.25 in the 800m run as did senior Kristen Ruckstuhl (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) in the 5,000m run (17:56.59).
