Lucy Cheadle’s National Championship Highlights NCAA Indoors for Washington

From Washington University Athletics

Washington University in St. Louis senior Lucy Cheadle was declared the national champion in Friday's women's 5,000-meter run, and added All-America honors in the 3,000 Saturday to highlight a strong showing at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field for the WashU track & field teams.

Cheadle's two All-America finishes, along with a seventh-place showing for the distance medley relay Friday, led the WashU women to a 12th-place finish in the team standings with 15 points. It was the women's eighth top-15 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships in school history. The WashU men finished tied for 45th with four points after placing fifth in the distance medley relay Friday, marking the 10th time in program history the Bears have scored at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

After a miscount of the laps caused a delay in results of the women's 5,000 from Friday night, NCAA officials declared Cheadle the national champion in the race. No times were awarded in the event, and individual placings were based on finishes of 4,800m of the race. Cheadle became the fourth indoor national champion in WashU women's track & field history, and earned her fourth straight All-America honor in the event after finishing sixth in 2012, fifth in 2013 and fourth in 2014. She is just the fourth individual in NCAA Division III women's indoor track & field history to earn four All-America honors in the indoor 5,000.

Saturday evening Cheadle added another All-America finish in the 3,000. She led through much of the race, but was unable to hold on over the final 300. Cheadle finished sixth in the event with a time of 9:51.75. It is the second year in a row that she has earned All-America honors in both the 3,000 and 5,000 after placing seventh in the 3,000 in 2014. With the two All-America finishes this weekend, Cheadle brought her career indoor All-America finishes to six, becoming the 25th individual in women's Division III history to earn at least six indoor All-America honors in her career.

Freshman Alison Lindsay placed 15th in the 3,000 with a time of 10:14.44. The women's 1,600 relay team also competed for the Bears Saturday. The team of sophomores Rebecca Ridderhoff, Kelli Hancock and Daisy Ogede and junior Emily Warner raced to what would have been a fourth-place finish, but was disqualified for impeding.
