The two Brandeis University track and field representatives at the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships held at Grinnell College each finished in 12th place in their respective events this weekend.
On Friday afternoon, rookie Emily Bryson (Quincy, Mass./No. Quincy) competed in the women's mile. Running in the second of two heats, Bryson finished seventh in her heat with a time of 5:04.62. Her 12th-place time was just under a second out of 10th place, which would have qualified her for the finals, and about two seconds shy of her personal best.
Bryson surpassed her seed, as she was ranked 16th out of the 17 entrants in the race. She was also the top rookie finisher. Bryson has been to the NCAA Championships in each of her first two collegiate seasons, having earned All-America honors in the fall competing in cross country.
On Sunday evening, sophomore Ryan Stender (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) competed in the 3000-meter run. Stender ended up living up to his pre-meet seed, finishing in 12th place with a time of 8:41.07. Unable to break into the lead pack during his race, Stender was the fourth of five New England competitors in the race.
