NYU Finishes Strong at Armory

NYU Finishes Strong at Armory

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's track & field team competed at the Ramapo College Indoor Select on Saturday, January 30, at the Armory on 168th Street in Manhattan.

"We've only been on the track for four weeks. This is when we are going to see our runners get their feet wet," said Head Coach Will Boylan-Pett. "It is good to see us getting better and stronger."

Running the 5k for the first time in her collegiate career, sophomore Lara Dorsky finished fifth in a time of 20:12.81.

"Lara is a hard worker," Boylan-Pett said. "Another personal best. She is starting to come into her own. Great to see."

Senior Becky Turlip secured second place in the mile with a time of 5:17.78. The Dunnellen, NJ, native missed out on a victory by only four one-hundredths of a second, finishing behind only Columbia University's Anna Fanta, Boylan-Pett's sister.

"Bittersweet," joked the Violet coach. "It was a funny moment for me. I was enjoying seeing my sister win a college race and have Becky end just behind. She (Turlip) gets a lot of confidence with each race she competes in. She is ready to run a fast mile and get into the position where she'll need to be, which is closer to five."

Also in her first race for NYU, freshman Mackenzie Quenneville finished in 13th place in the mile with a time of 5:55.91. Following behind, classmate Karen Yao took 17th in 6:01.31.

Turlip returned to the track to take part in the 800m, finishing sixth in 2:22.43. Junior Wendy He captured ninth place with a time of 2:24.86. In her first collegiate indoor race, freshman Anastasia Filimontseva clocked a time of 2:30.33 to take 17th.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Senior Drew Washington captured ninth place with a time of 1:02.23 to lead NYU in the 400m. Freshman Samantha Scoggins and sophomore Alexa Goldman finished behind with times of 1:02.98 (personal best) and 1:06.65, taking 14th and 34th, respectively.

- Scoggins also placed sixth in the 200m with a time of 26.95.

"Samantha is getting better and better shape-wise," added Boylan-Pett. "You can see the progress in just two weeks. Real good day for her."

- Junior Kassi Chrysanthopoulos finished 10th in the 3k with a time of 11:16.98 in her first race of the year.

- NYU was represented by junior Simone Cooper, sophomore Brianna Yee and senior Danielle Medellin in the triple jump. They finshed 11th (9.97m), 12th (9.93m) and 15th (9.55m), respectively.

"We are looking toward the Boston University Invite in two weeks and the UAA (University Athletic Association) Championships in four weeks," said Boylan-Pett. "We are just getting ready to go out there and race instead of being worried about times."
