The New York University women's track & field team competed in its first meet of the 2016 campaign at the Ramapo Season Opener on Friday, January 15, at the Manhattan Armory.

The Violets placed sixth out of 19 teams with a total of 52 points to finish just behind Rowan University (65 points) and ahead of Virgina Wesleyan (38 points). The College of New Jersey won the competition with 101 points.

Junior Erica Bohdan won the 3,000 meters with a career-best time of 10:39.76. Fellow junior Chey Watts secured ninth place with a time of 11:41.06.

"Erica looked like a completely different runner out there on the track today," said Head Coach Will Boylan-Pett. "She is gooing to have a great season."

Sophomores Maggie Lalowski and Emily Dethlefs secured sixth (5:25.64) and seventh place (5:27.76), respectively. Following close behind was ninth-place finisher, junior Justine Morris, with a time of 5:38.51.

Seniors Becky Turlip and Sarah Sisk both placed in the top five of the 1,000 meters with third- (3:06.36) and fifth-place (3:09.36) finishes, respectively.

In the 400 meters, freshman Justina Sanders-Schifano captured seventh place in 1:01.12. Fellow freshmen Danielle Murray and Samantha Scoggins took 15th (1:02.84) and 20 place (1:04.94), respectively.

"Justina and the whole freshman class performed well tonight," added Boylan-Pett. "They have to get their feet wet and get used to the college track. But, I am sure that will not take too long."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Frehmen Mary Conti and Alyssa Jean placed 14th (27.30) and 17th (27.51) in the 200 meters, respectively. Coming up behind was senior Drew Washington at 27th (28.71).

- In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Harper Randolph took eighth in a time of 9.94.

-The 4x400-meter NYU A team, consisting of only freshmen (Scoggins, Murray, Sanders-Schifano, and Conti) finished with a time of 4:00.00 to take fourth.

- Jean and senior Danielle Medellin captured sixth (10.42m) and ninth place (10.00m), respectively, in the long jump. Freshman Chelle Mitchell took 16th place, clearing 9.20m.
