Grace Yee Sets School Record as Tartans Win Ninth Annual Battle of the Obelisk

The Carnegie Mellon University women's indoor track and field team traveled to Cleveland Ohio on Saturday to compete against Case Western Reserve in the ninth annual Battle of the Obelisk. The women defeated the Spartans for the first time in the nine-year event winning 70-66. Combining the score with the men, who won 77-59, Carnegie Mellon won the 2017 title of the Obelisk Trophy by a combined score of 147-125.  

Senior Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) won the pole vault clearing a school record height of 3.53 meters. Yee topped freshman Michelle Karabin's (Ruffs Dale, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) school record of 3.52 meters from a week ago. This week, Karabin recorded a mark of 3.38 meters to place second behind Yee. Junior Sarah Miholer (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) completed the sweep for the Tartans in the event after clearing the bar at 3.08 meters to place third.

Sophomore Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) placed first in the high jump with a height of 1.50 meters. In the long jump, the Tartans placed one-two with sophomore Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) taking the top spot with a jump of 5.25 meters. Sophomore Autumn Hair (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) took second with a jump of 5.00 meters.

Senior Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) turned in two individual victories on Saturday. The senior won the 400-meter race in 1:00.22 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.84. Junior Jerilyn James (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.07.

Three freshmen turned in top finishes for the Cardinal and Gray. Kate Reilly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) crossed  first in the 800-meter run in 2:25.01, Rachel Reolfi (North Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) ran the mile in a time of 5:43.55 while Leah Kendrick (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.51.

The distance medley relay team of Reolfi, Reilly, sophomore Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J./Madison) and senior Ariel Tian (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) placed first in a time of 12:50.40.
