Debarati Bhanja of Carnegie Mellon Wins Four Events at the 10th Annual Battle of the Obelisk, Tartans Win Combined Title

The Carnegie Mellon University women's indoor track and field team lost a close battle to Case Western Reserve in the 10th annual Battle of the Obelisk on Saturday. The Tartans were outscored by the Spartans 71-65 despite taking first-place in eight events with four coming from junior Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany). The women's score helped win the trophy with a combined score of 139-133 with the men's team.

Bhanja started the day with a top finish in the long jump with a distance of 4.98 meters. The junior then crossed first in the 60-meter dash with a career-best time of 8.17 before winning the 200-meter dash in 26.72. She then teamed with senior Sarah Cook(Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton), sophomore Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y.) and freshman Valerie Reiling (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle Regional) to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:06.81.

Two Tartans finished behind Bhanja in the 60-meter dash and 200-meters dash, as junior Claire Yuan (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) crossed the line in 8.24 in the 60-meter to place second and Cook finished second in the 200-meter with a time of 27.08. Cook also turned in a top finish when she turned in a time of 59.63 in the 400-meter dash.

Carnegie Mellon swept the top three spots in the mile run with sophomore Kate Reilly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) winning the event in 5:23.77. Junior Wade Lacey (Albany, N.Y./The Albany Academies) and sophomore Valerie Collins (Wellesley, Mass.) finished second and third, respectively, with times of 5:35.77 and 5:35.94.

Reilly was joined by junior Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J./Madison) and sophomores Rachel Reolfi (North Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) and Vayda Farino (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) in the distance medley to win the race with a time of 12:54.53.

Sophomore Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) won the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.53 meters.
