Spartans Finish Second at SPIRE Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team turned in strong performances at the SPIRE Invitational, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.

With nine top-five finishes at the meet, the Spartan women placed second out of 12 teams in action with 90 points. 

The Spartan women totaled three first place finishes on the day, with junior Olivia Newman winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.46, sophomore Samantha Kelts placing first in the triple jump with a distance of 10.20 meters and senior Cassandra Laios claiming first in the weight throw with a toss of 16.52 meters.

Adding a second-place finish was freshman Eleanor Gaddy in the shot put (9.37m), while sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn finished third in the one-mile run (5:25.18) and senior Rachel Willard placed third in the triple jump (10.06m). Sophomore Bailey Flint added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (9.90m) and freshman Abby Waltz contributing a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (3.22m).

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Pasadyn, junior Maria DeRenzo, sophomore Shahed Eid and freshman Madison Vargo earned a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:20.32.
