From Emory University Athletics
Emory University head volleyball coach Jenny McDowell has announced the appointment of Joseph Goodson as assistant coach.
Goodson has made several stops at different Division I
institutions and joins the Eagles' program after a three-year stint
(2011-2013) as the head volleyball coach at Division I member
Jacksonville State University. Prior to his stint with the
Gamecocks' program, he was an assistant on Debbie Kirch's staff at
UW-Green Bay for four seasons (2007-10). While with the
Phoenix, he was hands-on in all facets of the organization and
administration of the program, and was in charge of working with
the defense and outside hitters as well as opponent scouting and
recruiting. In his final year, he helped guide UWGB to eight wins
in Horizon League play, then the second-highest total in program
history.
While at UWGB, he also served as the head coach of the Fox Cities
Elite Volleyball Club, where he directed that group to
qualification to the USA Volleyball National Championships for
three straight years. Before his tenure at Green Bay, Goodson
served as a volunteer assistant at Georgia Tech for one season, a
position he previously held at the University of Georgia. During
his time in the Peach State, Goodson was very involved in the club
volleyball scene. He was a staff coach for the Atlanta Juniors and
Tsunami Volleyball Clubs. He guided teams to the USA Junior Olympic
Volleyball National Championships in 2004, and from 2008- 2011.
"First and foremost, I would like to thank Jenny, and Athletics
Director Tim Downes for this incredible opportunity," Goodson
said. "Emory has the combination of a world renowned
academics and one of the top athletic departments in the nation -
things that other schools, regardless of division, are trying to
achieve. Jenny McDowell is one of the most respected coaches
in America, and I look forward to working with her, and the
tremendous group of student-athletes she has assembled, to continue
the successes and wonderful experiences of Emory Volleyball."
Goodson is a 1986 graduate of Berry College where he majored in
biology, psychology and physical education. He obtained his
master's degree in sports medicine from the United States Sports
Academy in 1989. He was an assistant athletic trainer at
Emory for five years while also serving as the head men's club
coach for one season. In 1996, Goodson served on committees
for the Atlanta Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. After
a one-year stint as a clinical athletic trainer at Georgia, he took
over as the head athletic trainer at Morehouse College for six
years.
