Brandeis Tops Emerson in Three Sets

The Brandeis University Women's Volleyball team pushed aside visiting Emerson in a non-conference match tonight in a short 3 set match. The Judges were closely followed by the Lions in the first two sets, clinching 25-21 wins in both games, only to have a strong finish with 25-10 in the third set. The Judges, with their third straight victory, improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Lions fall to 6-6.

Leading Brandeis to victory was senior outside hitter Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.) with 12 kills on 27 swings with only one error to record an outstanding .407 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Maddie Engeler (Sandusky, OH/St. Mary Central Catholic) added seven kills and four blocks to bring Brandeis to victory. Sophomore Jessica Kaufman (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) tallied eight kills and two blocks to round out the Judges front row effort.

More standout players for the Judges included Julie Kim (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) with 37 assists and 12 digs, and senior Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington)  who led the Judges defensively with 15 digs. Senior Shemira Pennyman (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney) also added 9 more digs.

Despite the loss, Emerson had some players who put forth a good effort. Sophomore middle blocker Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) swung true with eight kills. Freshman setter Elaine Nichols (Bountiful, Utah/Highland) urged the Emerson offense forward with 19 assists and four digs. Freshman libero Sam Harton (Cartersville, Ga./Darlington School) hustled hard for 16 digs.
