Jackie Gibbons Leads Tartans to a Pair of 3-0 Wins

Behind a strong hitting performance by sophomore Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), the Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team improved its record to 17-4 with two more 3-0 wins on Saturday, October 11 at the Ithaca College Tournament to close the tournament with four sweeps.

Gibbons hit .571 with eight kills to open the day as the Tartans defeated Wells College, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19. She followed it with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .429 against Utica College as the team won 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.

Joing Gibbons on offense against Wells was freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) with seven kills as sophomore setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) collected 18 assists. Defensively, senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) and sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) each had 11 digs while Donohue had six block assists and two block solos at the net.

In the win against Utica, Celentano followed Gibbons' 11 kills with eight of her own. Freshman Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) propelled the offense with a career-high 33 assists while also picking up 10 digs. Higgins was the digs leader for the 12th straight match with 18.
