In its first home match of the season, the University of Chicago volleyball team swept Illinois Wesleyan University 3-0 on Tuesday. The Maroons improved to 5-4 while the Titans fell to 4-5.
UChicago 3, Illinois Wesleyan 0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-19)
Both sides exchanged points throughout the first set and stayed within several points of each other. UChicago led late at 20-18, but IWU charged into the lead by winning six of the next seven points. Facing three set points, the Maroons dug deep and tied the score at 24-24 thanks to a kill from junior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley. The Titans missed on their next two attacks and UChicago completed the rally, 26-24.
UChicago's offense heated up as the second set went along. An 8-3 run early on put the home team ahead at 12-7. The Maroons maintained the lead from there and junior outside hitter Maren Loe hammered a hard spike to finish off the set at 25-18.
The third set saw UChicago take the lead and hold it once again. IWU kept close at 14-12 before a 4-1 run extended the Maroon lead to 18-13. UChicago finished off the set and the match, 25-19. The Maroons are now 20-8 at home since the start of the 2011 season.
