Maroons Defeat Washington to Finish Undefeated at UAA Round Robin #1

The University of Chicago volleyball team ran an efficient offense and came up big on the block to beat No. 4-ranked Washington University-St. Louis 3-1 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on Sunday.

The Maroons went 3-0 on the weekend and improved to 18-7 overall.

UChicago 3, Washington-St. Louis 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-12)

The Bears took control early on, jumping out to leads of 6-1 and 11-3. UChicago got back within four points at 15-11, but WashU regained control as the set wore on take the lead, 25-20.

The second set was tied at 6-6 when the Maroons began to slowly but surely pull away. UChicago won five of seven points late to go up 24-18 and then evened the match at 25-21.

The Maroons led wire-to-wire in the third set and kept the lead around eight points for the majority of the time. After winning in the third 25-14, UChicago caught fire again in the fourth set with an 11-3 run. The Maroons soon closed out the match at 25-12.

UChicago totaled 52 kills and hit .285, compared to 48 kills and a .174 attack percentage for the Bears. The Maroons totaled 10 blocks and freshman outside hitter Makenzie Elder served up six the team's 10 aces. The offense combined for 26 kills and only two errors over the course of the third and fourth sets.
