Tartans Stay Perfect with a Pair of Wins Saturday

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team Started play at the Haverford/Swarthmore Tournament on Saturday, September 5 an remained perfect on the season with two 3-0 victories.  The Tartans improve to 4-0 following wins over New Paltz St. and Swarthmore College.

In the Tartans first match of the tournament they defeated New Paltz St. by the scores of 25-12, 25-21, 25-22.  For the third straight match, freshman outside hitter Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) recorded double digit kills, as she ended with a match-high 13 while hitting .579. Junior middle blocker Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) tabbed seven kills and freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn.) had six.  In the win, junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) ended with 22 assists.

Junior Ivana Vlahovic (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Miami Country Day) recorded nine digs to lead the Tartans while three others, junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla.), sophomore Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif.) and Newton each had seven.

In the nightcap win over Swarthmore, Carnegie Mellon won by the scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.  Gibbons led the Tartans, as she hit .600 with 13 kills. Jurgens ended with eight kills while Mueller had seven.  Newton added 32 assists and tabbed three service aces.  Freshman Sydney Bauer (Allen, Texas) recorded two aces as did Vlahovic.

Higgins ended the night with 19 digs and Bauer had 10.

Head Coach Kim Kelly will seek her 200th victory at Carnegie Mellon tomorrow when the Tartans play Haverford at 10:00 a.m. before facing Cabrini at 2:00 p.m.  Kelly's record at the helm of the Tartans is 199-155 in her 11th season and holds an over mark of 449-237 in her 20th year coaching.
