Spartans Pick Up Two Wins on First Day of DoubleTree Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team added two more wins to its now 12-1 record in the 2015 season at the opening day of the DoubleTree Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (Pa.).

The Spartans defeated Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 in the early contest, and then in the second match of the day, earned a 3-0 win over Brooklyn.

After dropping the first set against Pomona-Pitzer 25-21, CWRU fought back to win the next three 25-22, 25-23 and 25-19.

Senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart led the Spartan attack with 12 kills, while junior outside hitter Marian Barton added 10. Senior right side hitter Dani Witri and senior middle hitter Haley Kauffman each recorded nine kills. Freshman setter Shannon Carroll registered 37 assists. Defensively, senior libero Katie Bestrecorded 18 digs, Bogart added 17 and Carroll tallied 16. At the net, Kauffman recorded a team-high eight block assists.

CWRU was dominant against Brooklyn, hitting .464 for the match, en route to winning 25-9, 25-4 and 25-9 with all 18 players on the roster getting playing time.

Bogart and Kauffman paced the attack again with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior outside hitter Kenya Moyers recorded a season-high six kills. Carroll recorded 30 assists, while senior setter Robyn Marks added eight assists. Best and Bogart contributed with nine and eight digs, respectively, and freshman defensive specialist Andrea Lu recorded seven.
