Spartans Split at Heidelberg Tri-Match

The No. 24 Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split on Saturday, with a win over Heidelberg University and a loss to Muskingum University.

The Spartans are now 18-3 overall and 2-1 in the UAA, while the Muskees are now 15-7 and the Student Princes record is now 16-6 overall.

CWRU defeated Heidelberg in four sets 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-20 highlighted by a .298 hitting percentage for the match, including .424 in the opening set. The Student Princes entered the match with only four losses to NCAA Division III opponents, three ranked among the top-15 teams in the nation, and all who earned bids to the NCAA tournament last season.

Senior middle hitter Haley Kauffman posted a season-high 17 kills with a .500 hitting percentage and totaled eight blocks. Junior middle hitter Kayla Pfaff contributed 15 kills with a .429 hitting percentage. The two middles combined for 32 kills, 10 blocks, and a .466 hitting percentage.

In addition to leading the team with 29 assists, freshman setter Shannon Carroll added seven kills in 13 total attacks, hitting .375. Junior outside hitter Marian Barton hit .333 with 14 kills.

Senior setter Robyn Marks registered 25 assists. Senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart led the Spartans with 26 digs, while senior libero Katie Best finished with 22, and freshman defensive specialist Andrea Lu finished with 18.

Against the Muskees, CWRU fell 25-20, 25-27, 30-28 and 25-15.

In the high-scoring battle, Bogart led the Spartans with 15 kills, Kauffman recorded 11, and Pfaff was also in double-digits with 10 kills. Carroll tallied 23 total assists and Marks contributed an additional 12. Bogart also led the Spartans with 29 digs with Best adding 28.
