Spartans Split on Day 2 to Conclude UAA Round Robin #2

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team, hosts of the University Athletic Association Round Robin #2, split on the second and final day of competition with a win over the University of Rochester and a loss to the No. 1 ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears.

The Spartans are now 21-5 overall and 5-2 in the UAA, while Yellowjackets fell to 12-13 overall and 2-5 in the UAA and the Bears improved to 25-2 for the season and 6-1 in the UAA.

In the 3-0 win against the Yellowjackets, senior middle hitter Haley Kauffman led the Spartan attack with a .433 hitting percentage. She recorded 16 kills as well as three blocks. Junior outside hitter Marian Barton put down 10 kills for CWRU during the match. Freshman setter Shannon Carroll tallied a team-high 24 assists and senior setter Robyn Marks finished with 14 assists. Senior libero Katie Best recorded a team-high 18 digs and freshman defensive specialist Karina Bondelid added 15 ups. 

Against the Bears, the Spartans dropped the first set and fought back to win the second, but Wash. U. was able to win the next two. CWRU was led by senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart who recorded 10 kills and 10 digs. Kauffman and Barton each contributed nine kills to the Spartan total and junior Kayla Pfafftallied eight. Carroll and Marks recorded 16 assists each. Best was busy in the back row, recording 18 digs against the Bears.

The Spartans concluded the UAA Round Robins with a 5-2 record. CWRU volleyball is now in third place in the UAA heading into the championships that will take place in Rochester the first weekend of November. The Spartans are only behind the No. 3 nationally ranked Emory Eagles and the No. 1 nationally ranked Bears.
