Emory Opens UAA Round Robin I With Two Saturday Wins

The No. 3-ranked Emory volleyball team opened the University Athletic Association Round Robin I on Saturday with two wins.  The Eagles defeated both Case Western Reserve (25-22, 25-20, 25-17) and Brandeis (25-10, 25-8, 25-17) by 3-0 scores, and in the process moved their season record to 19-2. Serving as the host of the Round Robin I is New York University.

Junior Kathryn Trinka led the Emory offensive effort against the Spartans of Case Western, totaling a match-high 18 kills while finishing with a .289 (18-5—45) attack percentage.  Junior Sarah Maher added 12 terminations en route to posting an impressive .379 hitting mark (12-1—29).  Senior Sydney Miles chalked up 45 assists and helped Emory record a solid .293 attack percentage by doling out 45 assists while chipping in 11 digs.  The Eagles held CWRU to a .163 hitting percentage (31-11—123), and enjoyed a 71-52 edge in digs with freshman Becky Breuer tying for match honors with 19.

Trinka and Maher once again were the stalwarts in the Brandeis encounter, with each player picking up 10 kills and hitting well over .400.  Maher hit .588 (10-0—17) with Trinka finishing at .450 (10-1—20).  For the match, the Eagles posted a .387 (36-7—75) attack percentage while holding the Judges to -.034.  Miles doled out 29 assists and chipped in eight digs to aid in the win.  Emory held a 42-31 cushion in digs as well as an 8-0 margin in total blocks.  Junior Shannon Nugent led all players with five total (1-4) blocks.
