The New York University women's volleyball team won its home opener, defeating Montclair State University 3-1 on Wednesday, September 9, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (3-3) got off to a slow start in the match, dropping the first set 25-21 to the Hawks (3-1).

However, NYU turned things around after that by sweeping the next three sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-21.

"We stuck to the plan and showed real fight through every game, even when we were behind," said Head Coach Jolie Ward.

Two Violets registered double-digit kills, with Nicole Frias leading the way with 11 and Shelby King contributing 10.

"As our only senior, it was nice to see Nicole get a win in the first home match of her final season," Ward added.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Violets never trailed in set two or three, and came from behind in the final set despite trailing by four points on several occasions.

- Elissa Davila-Shiau had a match-high 35 assists for the Violets.

- Celine Das (12) and Brooke Tannahille (10) each recorded double-digit digs for NYU.

"The great thing about this team is we have some very strong options coming off the bench," Ward explained. "So, players stepping into their roles are really contributing and adding to the success we are trying to achieve."
