Maren Loe Breaks Chicago Kills Record, Maroons Volleyball Sweeps Two Opponents

Maren Loe broke the school's career kills record and the University of Chicago volleyball team picked up two more 3-0 victories at the Carthage College Invite on Saturday.

The No. 13-ranked Maroons (11-1 record) have now swept nine of their 12 opponents in straight sets this season. At the end of the tournament, both Loe and senior setter Ragine Graves were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Loe, a senior outside hitter, came into the day needing six kills to set a new school record. The former record holder was Isis Smalls, who amassed 1,580 kills from 2008-11. Loe blasted a combined 34 in the two matches and now has 1,609 career kills.

UChicago 3, Bethel 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20)

The Maroons slowly pulled away from Bethel University in the first set and never trailed in the second set to build a commanding 2-0 lead. The third set was even at 17-17 when UChicago made its move by winning six of the next seven points, clinching the match shortly after.

UChicago posted a .284 hitting percentage and were led by the senior outside hitter duo of Loe and Jasmine Mobley. They collectively scored 34 of the team's 48 kills with a very efficient .377 hitting percentage. The Maroons also served seven aces.

Senior libero Brooke Watson and Graves recorded 12 digs each on defense. Graves posted 43 assists as well.

UChicago 3, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 0 (25-18, 25-17, 26-24)

The final match of the weekend came against University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. UChicago grabbed the first two sets handily, but the Blugolds answered back in the third set and led 19-15. The Maroons countered with five-straight points to retake the lead at 20-19. Wisconsin-Eau Claire held a set point at 24-23. However, a kill from Mobley and two service aces by sophomore outside hitter Frances McDonald sealed the match at 26-24.

UChicago hit. 263 as a team while serving up nine aces and totaling six team blocks. Loe matched her 14 kills with 14 digs. Mobley ranked second on the team with 11 kills. Graves led the defense with 19 digs and handed out 35 assists. Watson posted 15 digs defensively and freshman middle blocker Sydney Majors came up big at the net with six assisted blocks.
