Emma Gira and Jennie Ford combined for 32 kills as Rochester to defeat The College at Brockport, 3-1, at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Tuesday evening.
It was the fifth straight win for Rochester. The Yellowjackets are 7-2. Brockport lost its first match of the season. The Golden Eagles (10-1) won all of the matches 3-0 before Tuesday night.
Ford had 17 kills and 14 digs. Gira had 15 kills and hit .357. Ashloey Hunter had 19 digs and Nina Baek added 12 digs plus eight kills. Aimee Kohler had 44 assists and seven digs.
Ashley Capone led Brockport with 16 kills. Brianna Richardson had 12 kills. She hit .529. Capone hit .375. Sam Holdredge had 13 digs and nine kills. Kathleen Irwin had 12 digs, and Maddy Taylor had 10 digs. Noelle Poloncarz had 36 assists.
Richardson had two of Brockport's six block assists. Kira had two of Rochester's four block assists. Anna MacDonald had a solo block.
Rochester pulled out a tough 25-23 victory in the first game. Ford had three kills for Rochester's last three points with the teams swapping points: UR, Brockport, UR, Brockport, UR.
The Golden Eagles took command in the second set. A kill by Gira got Rochester within 11-12. Brockport scored four in a row, two of the points coming from Holdredge kills. Brockport won, 25-16, to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Rochester hit .526 with 12 kills and only two attack errors. The Yellowjackets scored six of the first seven points and went on to a 25-10 victory for a 2-1 lead.
The decisive fourth set was tight throughout. It was tied six times, the last at 7-7 on a kill by Brockport's Kayla Barber. UR edged into a 16-11 lead on an ace from Meghan Connor, but Brockport closed the gap, getting within 17-16 (Richardson's kill). Ford had two successful attacks and Baek added one to push it to a 20-16 lead for Rochester. Brockport was within 23-20 when Ford earned a kill (24-20). The Yellowjackets were whistled for a net violation (24-21) but Ford earned a kill on the next play to give Rochester a 25-21 victory.
