Tartans Open Season With Pair of 3-0 Victories

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened its 2016 season at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic on Friday, September 2 and came away with two 3-0 victories. The Tartans started play defeating McDaniel College 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19 before topping Gallaudet 25-16, 25-12 and 25-8.

Sophomore Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led the team in the win over McDaniel with nine kills while junior Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) tabbed eight. Senior setter Emily Newton(Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) ended with 26 assists.

Senior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) tallied 14 digs and sophomore Lauren Mueller(Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) ended with 10 in the win over McDaniel.

Against Gallaudet, Mueller led with nine kills and Jurgens recorded five. Higgins tallied four service aces and sophomore Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) led with nine assists.

Defensively, Mueller had nine digs while junior Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif.) and freshman Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) each tallied eight.
