The No. 7-ranked Emory volleyball got off to a fine start on the opening day of play at the University Athletic Association Round Robin I. The Eagles started out with a 3-1 win over the University of Rochester before posting a 3-0 decision over NYU that raised their overall record to 13-3.
In the Rochester match, Emory finished with a .235 hitting percentage (57-22--149) compared to the Yellowjackets mark of .128 (48-29--148). The Eagles had a trio of players finish with double-figure kills, headlined by senior Sarah Maher who totaled 14 terminations. Sophomore Sydney Leimbach racked up a career-best 13 kills en route to a .524 hitting percentage while senior Jessica Holler recorded 11 successful attack opportunities to go along with seven (3-4) total blocks. Freshman Sarah Porter dished out 38 assists in the win.
Emory posted a .300 hitting (38-11--90) and held the Violets of NYU to an effort of .082 (27-19--97), the ninth straight match it has enjoyed an advantage in that category. Holler pounded out a dozen kills and hit .391 (12-3--23) with Leimbach hitting a keen .667 on the strength of nine terminations and one miscue in 12 swings. Sophomore Becky Breuer paced the squad with 12 digs while Porter rang up 34 assists.
